Its construction was begun in the late 1500s by Attilio Incontri, a Volterra nobleman; the façade, attributed to Ammannati, is a rare and fine example of the transitional style between the Renaissance and Baroque. In 1850, Giuseppe Viti, an alabaster merchant, bought the palace and radically restored it.

Its twelve rooms, which are open to the public, are beautifully furnished with furniture, paintings, porcelain, alabaster collections and other valuable artistic objects representing Italian, European and Oriental art from 1400 to 1900. Everything has remained as it was seen over the centuries by the kings and princes who were hosted there. In 1964, Luchino Visconti shot part of the film “Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa” with J. Sorel and C. Cardinale, a film that won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Giuseppe Viti (1816-1860), one of the most important figures of 19th-century Volterra, was taken by his father to the United States when he was only eight years old, where, amidst a thousand vicissitudes, he learned the English language and, as he himself says in the autobiographical part that has remained with us, “to make an account”...

The extraordinary winter openings will be from 6 DECEMBER TO 10 DECEMBER (INCLUSIVE) AND FROM 27 DECEMBER TO 6 JANUARY 2025, WITH HOURS 10.30-17.00.

The Palace will remain closed from November 3rd.
